TOKYO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY
The Department of Urban System Science was established in 1994. Graduate School Programs started in same year. Before then, Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) had Center for Urban Studies (CUS). The Graduate School of Urban Science and CUS can be thought of as the other side of the same coin. CUS already had a history of over one quarter of a century (established in 1977), and can trace its roots back 40 years to a study group that was organized about 1960. We are extremely proud of our forerunners for their dedicated work in combining the urban science. In other words, although our graduate school is new, it does not mean without a history.
The department has 9 faculty members in total as shown below. About 50 graduate students, including foreign students, are enrolled.
A few of the graduates enter the graduate course to continue their studies. About a half of the graduates are working in the public sector, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, various local governments and research institutes. The other half are working for private companies such as planning and design consultants, general contractors, banks, insurance companies, trading companies and other industries.
