Welcome to the Department of Geography, Graduate School & Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences, Tokyo Metropolitan University.

Geography, the origin of which can be traced back to the Greek Era, investigates both physical and human environments in terms of spatial variability. Anthropogenic deterioration of global environments have become a serious problem, which geographers attack using both traditional and modern techniques, such as field observations, spatial analyses, GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and so on.

The department of geography, which was established in 1949 as the unique department having a doctoral graduate course, has developed step by step along with the related earth sciences. At present, we have six research units: Geomorphology and Quaternary Geology, Climatology, Environmental Geography, Global Environmental Changes, Geographical Information Sciences, and Urban and Human Geography. We look forward to welcoming those of future generations who are interested in working on various aspects of physical and human geography.
